April 23rd - Turkey celebrates National Sovereignty and Children's Day

Every year, the children in Turkey and all over the globe come together to celebrate ‘ Sovereignty and Children’s Day ‘.

April 23rd is dedicated to the children of Turkey and throughout the world. 

Ataturk’s gift to the children of Turkey

It was Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, who dedicated this day for children as he stated that they were the future of the new nation.

The Children’s Festival was first celebrated in Turkey on 23 April 1920, when the Turkish Grand National Assembly was opened.

Turkey celebrates

Throughout Turkey schools participate in ceremonies leading up to children’s day, they prepare their costumes for the dances, dramas, marches and other performances which take place on April 23rd. 

On this day, the children replace state officials and high-ranking bureaucrats in their offices.

The president, prime minister, cabinet ministers and provincial governors all symbolically turn over their positions to children. Children also replace deputies in Parliament and hold a special session to discuss matters concerning children’s issues.

They elect a child president who then addresses the country on national television, watched by the entire nation

Wreaths are laid at monuments of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Every year on April 23rd, Turkey invite children from all over the world to join in with the festivities to promote peace among different nations.

The motto of the International children’s festival is "Love, Friendship and Peace".
