The city of Kayseri is located 324km to the south-west of Ankara, in central Anatolia. Today Kayseri is a modern city with around 950.000 inhabitants. It was known before only as a working town and the starting point for tours into Cappadocia but the council of Kayseri has made major investments to smarten up the city, building a tramway, creating pedestrian zones in the town center, developing parks and restore historic sites and buildings. Kayseri is a pleasant place to stay a few days and enjoy the bustling life in the big city. It offers a good variety of restaurants, bars, some nightclubs in the bigger hotels, shops with traditional souvenirs and a modern shopping mall. If you don´t plan to spend a few days here then the interesting sites in Kayseri can be seen in a day trip from Göreme
The ancient city of Kayseri on the eastern edge of Cappadocia has outstanding Seljuk architecture. Most of the old buildings are made of dark, volcanic stone which makes a nice contrast to the Mount Erciyes (3917m). The Mount Erciyes offers good possibilities for hiking in the summer and for skiing in the winter. The ski slopes range from beginner to experienced skiers. Kayseri's citizens are renowned in Turkey for being sharp traders and you can test your haggling skills in one of the two historic bazaars of Bedesten Hani and Vezir Hane in the city center.
