Trabzon

Province of Turkey on the Black Sea coast

Trabzon is one of the major cities of Turkey and the biggest one in the Eastern Black Sea region. Its population is 757,353 (2012) and has an area of 4,664 km2. Due to rainy climate even in the summer months, it has lots of green forests and mountains with many rivers and highlands. There are major roads connecting Trabzon to other cities, and a big harbor for international shipping traffic in the Black Sea and an international airport.

Trabzon: Mentioned in the memoirs of Marco Polo and Evliya Çelebi, Trabzon, with its cultural andnatural riches, is a livablecity throughout the seasons. The city, which was initially named as Trazepos, lies in a beautiful country side between the Black Seacoast and the mountains Zigane.

The city, which had lived under the reign of many civilizations throughout centuries, was taken by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror during the Ottoman Conquest. It eventually became a city of the Republic of Turkey that was founded in 1923.

The festivities and activities organized in this city, famous for its folk dances and authentic instrument, the fiddle, provide for great entertainment.

Trabzon attracts the attention primarily for its silver and gold processing; and is famous for its specially designed bracelets called "Trabzon Bileziği."

A trading center of increasing value Trabzon, thanks to its rainy climate, is also rich in fertile lands.

Blessed with all colors of green the city invites visitors to discover its natural wonders!

The Black Sea's busiest port, Trabzon mixes cosmopolitan buzz with a somewhat louche, seaside-town feel. Not the Black Sea coast's largest city but certainly its most sophisticated, Trabzon is too caught up in its own whirl of activity to worry about what's happening in far-off İstanbul or Ankara.

Contrasting with the gracious, medieval church (now mosque) of Aya Sofya, and the one-time Byzantine monastery at nearby Sumela, the modern world shines through on Atatürk Alanı, Trabzon's busy main square in the eastern section of the city centre. Indeed, the exotic city Rose Macaulay described in The Towers of Trebizond (1956) is very much a distant memory now.

East of Atatürk Alanı (also known as Meydan Parkı) and down a steep hill is the port. There are cafes and restaurants around Atatürk Alanı and west along Uzun Sokak and Kahramanmaraş Caddesi. West of the centre, past the bazaar, is Ortahisar, a picturesque old neighbourhood straddling a ravine.
