Ankara is a modern working city and the centre of the Turkish government; it houses all foreign embassies and is the centre of commerce and industry and has many excellent universities. Ankara is home to a wide range of cultural events with its Opera, Ballet and the Philharmonic Orchestra.
The charming old part of Ankara, called Ulus, you will find the castle which is surrounded by old ottoman houses. They have been restored displaying galleries, restaurants and bars. Near the old town in the neighbourhood of Cirkikcilar, you can visit the popular tourist bazaar with its traditional carpets and fabrics; the Bakircilar bazaar located nearby (Coppersmith Bazaar) is where you will find not only copper but goods like embroidery, jewellery and antiques.
