Sardis is located 88 km to the east of Izmir. In early Lydian times is had been the industrial center of the Lydian kingdom, its wealth came from dyeing the finest wool and carpets. The earliest settlement can be dated back to the 7th century BC. Today you can still see the partly reconstructed gymnasium, synagogue and byzantine shops. Other finding are in the archeological museum in Manisa such as: roman mosaics, sculptures, a helmet from the 6th century and pottery. From the acropolis you have a good view over the valley and the excavations.
Opening times: The site is not gated, it is open all year around.
